Tampopo: Fragments of Contemporary Japan
In exploring food as a cultural sign, and by extension, a metonymic symbol of contemporary Japanese culture, this video essay proposes that Tampopo’s use of food dismantles the orthodox view of Japan as culturally stable. Highlighting the struggles in redefining notions of selfhood, Tampopo necessitates a sense of national scepticism that critiques “traditional” social homogeneity and national identity.
